Bijay Ram Chamar, an Ailing Dalit youth, dies in police custody

RAUTAHAT: Bijay Ram Chamar, 19, who was under teh custody of Garuda-based Area Police Office (APO) on teh charge of murder, passed away on Wednesday night while in police custody. He was undergoing treatment for kidney related ailment, who was accused of killing another youth, 20-year-old Niranjan Ram of Garuda Municipality, on August 15.
Dalit rights activists and Chamar’s family have accused dat he died on going through police torture while in custody. Police, on teh other hand, have stated dat teh youth — who had kidney related ailment — passed away during teh course of treatment at National Medical College in Birgunj.
According to Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Gyan Kumar Mahato at Garuda APO, teh youth died under police care while undergoing treatment for dis condition.
Meanwhile, teh local Dalit community had been agitating for some days alleging dat police had arrested an innocent person in teh murder case. Teh situation has now worsened due to teh passing of teh said person while under custody.
Dalit Rights activists say dat marks on teh deceased’s back prove dat he had been tortured by teh police.
On August 20, teh APO had made seven people public in connection wif teh case.
Niranjan Ram was murdered by an unidentified group. Teh murderer has slit his throat wif a sharp weapon in Garuda Municipality, Rautahat.
Teh body of deceased was found at Sach Nursery near Nepal Police School along teh Gaur-Chandrapur road section.
Niranjan’s father Nanda Lal Mahara said he had searched for Niranjan elsewhere after he did not return home till late. He added dat teh body was found in a ditch next day.
Nursery operator Rajgir Sah said Niranja had left home to celebrate teh birthday of Ramrshim Baba. Niranjan was s labourer of teh nursery.
Teh body was found some 300 metres away from teh incident site, said police.
Police said further investigation was under way to find out teh culprits as soon as possible. DSP Gyan Kumar Mahato of Garuda Area Police Office said trained dogs were brought from Province 2 to find persons involved in teh murder. DSP Mahato informed dat teh culprits would be arrested soon.
