Dalit Youth Leader Khagendra Sunar Announces New Phase of Movement

“We will come back stronger, like hungry tigers.”

Kathmandu, January 21 — Dalit youth leader Khagendra Sunar has announced the launch of a new phase of the Dalit rights movement, vowing to escalate protests for ensuring constitutional rights for the Dalit community. Speaking at a press conference held at the Report Club, Bhrikutimandap, Sunar, the head of the Dalit Campaign for Dalit, outlined the next steps of the movement.

Having previously led a 45-day protest at Maitighar Mandala under the banner “Dalit Lai Khai” (Rights for Dalits), Sunar declared plans for an intensified movement. This includes demonstrations surrounding key government institutions such as the Election Commission, Singha Durbar, and the President's residence, Sheetal Niwas. "Our single-point demand is the assurance of Dalit rights as enshrined in the constitution," he stated firmly.

Planned Actions Across Provinces
Sunar also announced sit-ins at the offices of Chief Ministers in all seven provinces, demanding the safeguarding of the entitlements and representation of the Dalit community, which constitutes 14% of Nepal’s population. Criticizing the lack of Dalit representation in the newly formed Land Commission, Sunar accused the government of deliberate exclusion, stating, "The state continues to belittle, oppress, and deprive Dalits of opportunities."

Criticism of Party-Aligned Dalit Leaders
Sunar didn’t hold back in criticizing Dalit leaders affiliated with mainstream political parties, accusing them of prioritizing party agendas over community welfare. "We are on the streets, carrying nails, while they are busy rubbing oil on their leaders' feet and backs. They have become accomplices in the conspiracy to keep Dalits subjugated," he said.

He questioned the loyalty of such leaders: "Those in power because of their identity as Dalits should prioritize serving the Dalit community. Should their allegiance lie with Dalit organizations or with their parties?" He further criticized their inaction, remarking, "Dalit leaders have grown silent within the party. If they won’t stand for the movement, who will?"

Determination for Justice
Sunar emphasized the movement's slogan, “Justice for all,” reiterating that it aims to address the systemic discrimination and neglect faced by the Dalit community. “We will march from the gates of government offices to the homes of high-ranking officials, demanding answers about Dalit rights,” he declared.

Call for Nationwide Mobilization
Pledging to take the movement to every village and settlement, Sunar warned of the community’s readiness to face state suppression. "We are prepared to challenge the system, even if it means prison sentences for life. We are stronger now like hungry tigers ready to enter the lion's palace," he concluded.

This renewed wave of activism highlights the enduring struggle for Dalit rights in Nepal and the growing frustration among leaders and activists over systemic injustices.
