Kathmandu, Nepal – The Stella Tamang Peace Innovations Award 2024 was bestowed upon Indira Ghale in recognition of her enduring contributions to fostering peace and justice in Nepal's diverse communities.
The award, named after Stella Tamang—a trailblazer in women’s empowerment, child education, and peacebuilding—was inaugurated earlier this year to honor grassroots peacebuilders for their innovative approaches, leadership, and unwavering dedication to creating peaceful societies.
Upon receiving the honor, Ghale reflected on the challenges and urgency of peacebuilding in today's complex world. “We have struggled from the grassroots, fighting all forms of societal inequalities for decades, yet peace and justice still seem far-fetched,” she said.
Ram Tiwari, representing the Nepal Forum for Restorative Justice and the award’s organizing body, emphasized Nepal's rich legacy of grassroots peace initiatives. “Although peace is difficult to achieve, Nepal offers countless examples of innovative peace work. We aim to celebrate that with this award,” he remarked.
The Stella Tamang Peace Innovations Award will be presented annually to distinguished social workers and peace advocates. The next recipient will be honored at the Peace Innovations World Summit, set to take place from September 19–21, 2025, in Nepal.
