‘Self-esteem Dignity Award’

An award established by the founding chair of the Association of Dalit Women’s Advancement of Nepal (ADWAN) and social activist, Dr. Bishnu Maya Pariyar in coordination with ADWAN, a ‘Self-esteem Dignity Award’ was conferred to a writer, thinker, and social activist Sanjeev Karki and social campaigner Ram Kumari Das for their continuous campaigns against caste-based discrimination and untouchability.
The award, consisting of a purse of Rs 50,000 and a plaque of felicitation, was conferred to Karki and Das at a function organized in Kathmandu to celebrate the silver jubilee of ADWAN.
Karki has been writing against caste-based discrimination and untouchability widely practiced in Nepal and he has been active in creating awareness among the Dalit communities and movements for health education for the last decade. Similarly, a resident of Lahan Municipality of Siraha district Das is a social campaigner struggling against gender-based discrimination. She was forced to do child marriage and also a victim of domestic violence. Das has been working hard to ensure that other Dalit children and women won’t face a similar fate to the one she met.
