Reorganizing for Rights - Dalit Community Urged to Take Action

Kathmandu, Nepal.

Dalit rights activists gathered at the 25th general meeting in Kathmandu and issued a passionate call for renewed efforts to combat caste-based discrimination and untouchability still prevalent in Nepalese society. Despite the establishment of a federal democratic republic and a three-tier government, concerns persist over the ongoing plight of Dalits.

Former ambassadors and JMC advisors spoke at the event and emphasized the urgent need for the Dalit community to reorganize and assert their rights more forcefully. "In a democratic country, Dalits are still being subjected to lives of servitude," Advisor Sundas lamented, highlighting the stark reality faced by many in the community.

Binod Pahadi, Constituent Assembly member and advisor at the Jagaran Media Centre echoed these sentiments, expressing deep sorrow over the continued discrimination faced by Dalits. He underscored the importance of the state taking proactive measures to ensure Dalits receive their entitled rights, emphasizing the need for special programs to uplift the community educationally and economically.

The Jagran Media Centre, a pivotal platform advocating for Dalit rights, has been instrumental in shedding light on these issues and fostering social justice initiatives. President Kamala Bishwakarma reaffirmed the Centre's commitment to advancing Dalit causes, announcing forthcoming programs aimed at capacity-building for Dalit journalists.

In a landmark move, the Centre issued a three-point appeal, urging the mandatory inclusion of Dalit journalists in political appointments within public media and communication institutions. This initiative aims to empower Dalits in the media sector, ensuring their voices are heard and their stories told without prejudice.

As Nepal navigates its democratic journey, the rallying cry from Dalit activists signals a critical juncture in the fight against caste-based discrimination. The call to reorganize and assert their rights stands as a testament to their unwavering commitment to justice and equality in Nepalese society.
